This event, designed as a part of the club rush for the Winter quarter, invites students to engage in an exciting, innovative challenge. Participants will select one of four unique scenarios, each designed to spark creativity and innovative thinking in different areas.

The event is structured to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, creativity, and practical problem-solving.

The Student Entrepreneurs Network at UC San Diego proudly welcomes you to ‘Innovators’ Rush: Winter Edition’ – a fast-paced, exhilarating challenge where your creativity and innovation skills are put to the test. Hosted by the Student Entrepreneurs Network at UC San Diego, this 1.5-hour ideathon invites students from all disciplines to tackle four unique, real-world challenges. Are you ready to transform your ideas into impactful solutions?

Challenges & Overview

1. Sell Me This Pen – Consumer Product Innovation

Description: Inspired by the famous scene from “The Wolf of Wall Street,” this challenge tasks teams with innovating a mundane product, like a pen, into something extraordinary. The focus is on creativity in product design, utility, and marketing strategy.

Goal: Develop a unique, marketable concept for a common item and create a persuasive sales pitch.

2. How Much Does a Polar Bear Weigh? – Environmental Solutions

Description: A playful take on a critical issue, this challenge addresses climate change through innovative environmental solutions. Teams will develop ideas to mitigate the impacts of global warming, focusing on sustainability and ecological balance.

Goal: Create a practical, impactful solution to a specific environmental issue exacerbated by climate change.

3. This Content Was Flagged as AI – AI Ethics and Innovation

Description: With a satirical nod to the overreliance on AI-generated content, teams are challenged to develop ethical and innovative AI solutions that address the challenges of AI in education and the workplace.

Goal: Propose a creative AI application that enhances learning or productivity while addressing ethical concerns such as authenticity and misuse.

4. Damn Robots Took My Job! – Sustainable Automation

Description: Reflecting on the impact of automation and AI on low-skill labor, this challenge focuses on developing sustainable methods to integrate automation in the workforce without leaving anyone behind.

Goal: Design an innovative solution that balances the efficiency of automation with the socio-economic implications for the workforce, ensuring a harmonious transition.

Each challenge encourages participants to think critically and creatively, addressing real-world issues through innovative approaches.

Event Timeline

Introduction (10 mins)

  • Briefing on the event’s purpose, outline of each challenge, and the rules.

Team Formations (10 mins)

  • Participants form teams based on their challenge of interest.

Brainstorming and Development (20 mins)

  • Teams brainstorm and develop their ideas.

Feedback & Elevator Pitch (10 to 20 mins)

  • Brief consultations with judges for guidance and refinement of ideas.
    • Option to merge teams

Presentations & Judging (20 mins)

  • Each team presents their solution.

Closing Remarks (10 mins)

  • Judges provide brief feedback and select winners and close events.

Judging Criteria

Originality: How unique and creative is the idea?

Feasibility: Can the idea be realistically implemented?

Impact: What is the potential impact of the idea?

Presentation: How well was the idea communicated?
